mikecorriero:

A few 4x6 inch postcard sized sketches I’ve been producing for people who have donated and helped pay some medical bills and cremation bills for my pup Rudy who passed away about a week ago. People have been extremely generous and have provided a massive amount of support. I’m so proud to be a part of the art community.

Barnard’s Swordswallower - By Alex Ries
Living in the oceans of a dense metal rich planet, the Swordswallower moves through the sea on a single undulating ventral fin. As it moves, its jaw sweeps planktonic life into its small mouth at the back of the ‘net’, where it is filtered and any food swallowed. The membrane it uses to hunt may look delicate, but is make from silk-like secretions and is easily repaired by glands in the egg shaped ‘mouth’. To alter its depth, a gas bladder fills much of its insides and can change volume at will, letting the Swordswallower feed using minimum energy. Under the shadow of this specimen, a school of smaller fish-size relations of the Swordswallower seek shelter under its shadow. If I predator attacks, the feeding mouth of the large creature can be retracted, and the fish size creatures will hide inside. In return for this shelter, the fish like animals keep the Swallower free from parasites. Trailing from the rear of this specimen are two long pale strings of gametes, releasing hundreds of reproductive cells into the sea as it swims, to mix in the water with the eggs and sperm of others swimming nearby.

BLUE -Ornithischia
Quick sideview of this guy, bottom view probably the most interesting part at this point. Idea is that everything about him reinforces the defensive shield pose it would go into when threatened against the predator creature, so the back leg protrusion (as well as the smaller second pair of rear legs) would act as added support when it digs in and flares out its back to lift that heavy plate, could see it moving and shifting the back plates up/down while walking as well. I imagine his head/mouth at the front to look like the fish that attach themselves to sharks…more like some sort of suction device, so it constantly has its head down feeding on the ground, the alien characters might use these guys as some sort of cow type animal in their village, herding them around and keeping them as added natural protection from predators coming into their territory.
